History of Thai Traditional Medicine
Thai Traditional Medicine has a history that it began around 1725-1729 with the establishment of a hospital called Athogyasala, which provided medical services similar to the current Thai traditional medicine clinic. In addition, during the Sukhothai period, it was discovered that King Ramkhamhaeng the Great created a large herb garden for villagers to collect herbs for treatment when they were sick.
Until the Ayutthaya period, Thai traditional medicine was influenced by India, which is called Ayurveda, which is the treatment of the balance of the four elements, which are the components of life. Until the establishment of the Department of Medicine, the Royal Pharmacy, the Department of Pharmacists, and the Department of Massage, etc. and there was a preparation of medicine called “Narayana’s Royal Medicine Formula” which collected the medicine recipes from that era.
In the Rattanakosin period, there were collections and recordings of medicine formulas, Rishi Datton formulas, and Thai massage formulas in the pavilions and there was continuous development until the reign of King Rama V who included Thai traditional medicine in the Medical School at Siriraj. and the printing of a medical textbook called Phaetyasat-Songkhro (Royal Edition) in 1895, which contained information on both modern medicine and traditional Thai medicine. There was a period when Western medicine came in, causing traditional Thai medicine to lose interest. But eventually, in the reign of King Rama IX, traditional Thai medicine was revived once again and has remained popular to this day.
